INTRO

Soniashnyk is a variant of our best selling Augustus octave fuzz pedal. Early in the production of Augustus, one unit didn’t pass QC. I wasn’t exactly sure what was wrong with it, but it wasn’t quite behaving correctly. It sounded cool, though, so I set that one aside and saved it for a rainy day. When Reverb.com approached me about a fundraiser for Ukraine, I had just the thing. After a little breadboarding I had a scheme worked out to reproduce the broken, but still pretty cool sounding behavior of the “defective” Augustus.

CONTROLS

The interface really couldn’t be simpler. There are two knobs. The knob on the right affects the gain of the circuit. Turning the knob clockwise will increase the sustain. The knob on the left affects the “brokenness” of the circuit. With the left knob fully clockwise, you get the full, not-broken, octave up fuzz effect. As you turn this knob counterclockwise, the octave is de-emphasized and it’s more like just a really gnarly fuzz. The two controls are interactive, not just with each other, but with your guitar and your playing style. There are no bad sounds.

Output volume is fixed to be just a little above unity.

POWER

Soniashnyk may be powered from an internal 9V battery or from an external power supply. The 9V battery is accessed by removing the four screws that hold on the bottom plate of the pedal.

Soniashnyk can be powered from any power supply intended for use with pedals that has a negative tip (the standard) and provides DC voltage anywhere from 9–18 volts.

Soniashnyk is designed to work with 9V power, and, in my opinion, there is no sonic benefit to using a higher voltage with this circuit. You’re welcome to try it, though. Let me know how it goes, if you do!
